“When I cry, I play Stevie. When I lie in bed wondering why I’m not more successful, I put on “Dreams” and imagine Stevie watching me with quiet disappointment.”
Me too, Vince! Except I always play “Gypsy,” it gets me through anything. Man…Stevie just…gets it. She gets me.
We were born around the same time. “Who Can it be Now?” is one of my all time 80s faves by Men at Work, and “Overkill.” I loooove “Overkill.” Awesome piece.
"My life didn’t have a timeline. It had a playlist.” That line alone could raise a generation. Thank you for this beautifully weird, utterly alive tribute to growing up in stereo.
I was a Gen Xer who was just shy of 11 years old when MTV landed on the moon. I spent my pre-teen, teen years, and beyond immersed in its world - from Headbanger's Ball to 120 MInutes to, later, Unplugged. When they offered up VH1, though, I admit I found myself gravitating over there. It was quite a time to come of age. Great piece!

I had wonderful memories and I was lucky to grow up, surrounded by all types of music

Thanks! I was a huge VH1 fan, too.
MTV was for when the parents were at work; when they came home, it was an immediate switchover to VH-1 or The Disney Channel.
Ha! Not at my house!
